Mammoth Lakes sits on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada at 7,953 feet, in the shadow of a volcano. The Long Valley Caldera โ€” the collapsed remnant of a supervolcanic eruption 760,000 years ago โ€” lies just south of town, and the volcanic landscape it left behind is still active: natural hot springs bubble up across the region, steam vents hiss at Hot Creek, and the distinctive dark pumice and obsidian of the terrain remind you that this is geologically young country.

On top of this dramatic geological backdrop, Californiaโ€™s premier ski resort operates November through May or June. And in summer, five alpine lakes, 80 miles of mountain bike trails, Devils Postpile, and John Muir Wilderness hiking make Mammoth one of Californiaโ€™s most complete outdoor destinations.

Longest Ski Season in California

Mammoth Mountain's high base elevation and north-facing terrain let it stay open through Memorial Day โ€” and occasionally into July in big snow years. In February and March, 3,500 acres of skiable terrain operates at full capacity with some of the best snow conditions in the American West.

Mammoth Mountain: The Resort

At 3,500 skiable acres, 3,100 feet of vertical drop, and a summit elevation of 11,053 feet, Mammoth Mountain is the largest ski resort in California. It covered by the Ikon Pass and has multi-day packages that make it significantly more affordable than buying daily lift tickets at the window.

The mountainโ€™s strongest terrain is mid-mountain โ€” the Canyon Lodge zone and the Roller Coaster runs โ€” but the summit access via the Panorama Gondola delivers views across the Eastern Sierra that make even a non-skiing trip up worthwhile. The Dragonโ€™s Back and Cornice Bowl areas are for experts; the Schoolyard runs around Canyon Lodge are genuine beginner terrain.

The mountain biking operation in summer is excellent โ€” 80+ miles of trails, with the bike park serviced by the gondola and chair lifts. The transition from ski resort to bike park is well-managed, and the technical trail options match anything in Utah or Colorado.

Devils Postpile National Monument

Ten miles west of Mammoth (accessible only by mandatory shuttle in summer), Devils Postpile is one of the worldโ€™s great geological formations: a 40โ€“60-foot wall of hexagonal basalt columns, the remnant of a lava flow that cooled and cracked 80,000 years ago. The columns are so geometrically perfect they look engineered.

The 0.4-mile walk from the shuttle stop to the Postpile is easy. Continue on the 2.5-mile trail to Rainbow Falls โ€” a 101-foot waterfall that generates rainbow displays in the mist at midday. The round trip is 5 miles on a maintained trail through Ansel Adams Wilderness, with the San Joaquin River alongside. This is among the best easy half-day hikes in the Eastern Sierra.

Devils Postpile

Sixty-foot hexagonal basalt columns formed 80,000 years ago when a lava flow cooled and cracked with mathematical precision. One of the finest examples of columnar basalt in the world, accessible by a short flat trail from the summer shuttle stop.

The Mammoth Lakes Basin

The basin above town contains five alpine lakes within 5 miles of town โ€” Lake Mary, Lake George, Lake Mamie, Twin Lakes, and Horseshoe Lake โ€” connected by trails that work as a loop or individual destinations. Lake Mary is the most popular (and most developed, with boat rentals); Lake George is the most scenic with Crystal Lake above it accessible by a steeper trail.

The Mammoth Lakes Basin is the starting point for serious John Muir Wilderness backpacking, with routes to Duck Pass, Convict Lake, and eventually the John Muir Trail. Day hikers can tackle Duck Pass (10 miles round trip) for one of the best alpine views in the Eastern Sierra without needing permits (permits are required for overnight trips).

Hot Springs: The Volcanic Legacy

Wild Willyโ€™s Hot Springs (Crowley Hot Springs) sits about 15 minutes south of town near Crowley Lake โ€” three natural pools in the sagebrush, ranging in temperature from 95โ€“105ยฐF, with mountains visible in every direction. Itโ€™s free, undeveloped, and one of the genuine wild experiences of the Eastern Sierra. Test the temperature before getting in โ€” the source is volcanic and some pools can be scalding near the inflow.

Hot Creek Geological Site (5 minutes from town) has boiling springs and steam vents in a dramatic gorge โ€” swimming was closed due to increasing volcanic activity, but the viewing area and the geology are extraordinary and worth the 15-minute walk.

Mammoth Lakes Basin in Summer

Five alpine lakes within 5 miles of town, blooming with wildflowers July through August and reflecting the Sierra Nevada peaks above. In summer the basin is completely transformed from its ski-season identity โ€” quieter, greener, and equally spectacular.

Scottโ€™s Tips

Logistics: Mammoth is a real town โ€” it has grocery stores, independent restaurants, and a local community year-round. The Village at Mammoth is the pedestrian center. For ski season, choose between ski-in/ski-out lodging at Main Lodge or Canyon Lodge, or stay in the village and use the free ESTA shuttle. In summer, the town is the base for everything.

Best Time: Skiing: Februaryโ€“March for best snow conditions; April for warm sunny corn snow days. Summer: Julyโ€“September when the lakes are clear and wildflowers bloom. October is spectacular for fall color and zero crowds. Avoid the shoulder weeks in late November (before good snow) and late Mayโ€“June (snow on trails, limited summer operations).

Getting Around: The free ESTA shuttle connects the town, gondola stations, and Devils Postpile in summer โ€” it works well enough for ski days without a car. For hot springs access and off-the-beaten-path hiking, a car is useful. Highway 395 south to Bishop is an excellent half-day road trip.

Money: Lift tickets bought at the window run $130โ€“200/day. Buy online in advance or get an Ikon Pass if youโ€™ll ski 4+ days. The town has good cheap restaurants (Stellar Brew, Robertoโ€™s) and a grocery store for self-catering. Vacation rentals with kitchens are significantly better value than hotel rooms for groups.

Safety: Town is at 7,953 feet โ€” altitude adjustment is real. Take it easy the first day. Summit operations reach 11,053 feet where wind chill can be extreme. Volcanic hot springs can be scalding โ€” test before entering. Afternoon thunderstorms develop quickly in summer โ€” be below treeline by 2pm on hiking days. Highway 395 can require chains in winter.

Packing: Ski season: full waterproof layers, goggles, quality gloves, face mask for summit wind, and hand warmers. The summit at Mammoth in February can be -20ยฐF with wind chill. Summer: sunscreen, layers (40ยฐF nights in August), bear canister for overnight hiking (required in Mammoth Lakes Basin wilderness), and waterproof boots for creek crossings.

Local Culture: Mammoth has a strong year-round mountain culture โ€” skiing, climbing, mountain biking, trail running, and fishing all have serious local communities. LA families descend on weekends in ski season; the mid-week mountain is far more relaxed. Highway 395 through the Eastern Sierra is one of Americaโ€™s great unsung road trips โ€” Bishop, Lone Pine, and the Alabama Hills are all worth adding.
